Bocas del Toro has a loud and colourful way of celebrating its independence. On November 16th 1903, the northwestern region of Panama seperated from Colon, the former center of colonial trade, and was declared a province on its own. On „Bocas Day“ the streets of the capital get flooded with young musicians. More than 50 marching bands representing all the different schools of the province parade along the main street. Until midnight the sound of drums and horns echoes throgh the whole town.
